Spanish 1 (6,7 and 8th grade)

 

Course Objective

Students will develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish while learning to appreciate and understand the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Students will progress toward a novice skill level as they are introduced to the Five Program Goals of the TEKS for Languages Other than English: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. Students will be assessed regularly in their abilities to produce and comprehend the language, both orally and in writing.

 

Note: Course fulfills high school graduation requirement.

 

South America

South America is a continent located in the Western Hemisphere, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. It can also be considered as a subcontinent of America.It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest. It includes twelve sovereign states:

 Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana,Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela – and two non-sovereign areas – French Guiana, an overseas department of France, and the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory (though disputed by Argentina). In addition to this, the ABC islands of the Netherlands and Trinidad and Tobago may also be considered part of South America.

 

Central America

Central America (Spanish: América Central, Centroamérica or América del Centro) is the southernmost, isthmian portion of theNorth American continent, which connects with South America on the southeast. Central America is bordered by Mexico to the north, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Central America consists of seven countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.

Caribbean islands

 

There are thousands of islands that are part of the island countries of the broadly defined Caribbean region: Anguilla has 21; Antigua-and-Barbuda has; Aruba (4); Barbados (2, formerly 3 but Pelican Island is now absorbed into Barbados through land reclamation, 1956–1961); Belize (many); British Virgin Islands; Cayman Islands; Cuba; Dominica; Dominican Republic; Grenada; Guadeloupe; Haiti; Honduras; Jamaica; Martinique; Montserrat; Netherlands Antilles (25, this includes half of Saint Martin); Puerto Rico; Saint Barthélemy; Saint Kitts-and-Nevis (20); Saint Lucia; Saint Martin (8); Saint Vincent-and-the-Grenadines; Trinidad-and-Tobago; and United States Virgin Islands.
